CLEARFIELD – Due to comments received Clearfield residents, the Clearfield Borough Police Department would like to offer some suggestions to help residents during the winter months regarding care and maintenance of vehicles.
Ensure that your vehicle has sufficient tread on the front and back tires. It is just as important to have good tread on your tires, to ensure traction, as it is the ability to steer your vehicle. Keep the lights of your vehicle on when driving so that oncoming traffic are better able to see you.
Windshield washer fluid is also very important. Make sure the windshield washer fluid reservoir is full and check the wipers to see that there is sufficient rubber in order to remove moisture from the windshield.
Keep your fuel tank to at least half-full during the winter months. Adding dry gas or other fuel additives can help ensure your vehicle is running properly.
It is a law that snow must be removed from your vehicle, as much as possible, so that snow and ice “blow off” does not occur while you are driving. It is a safety concern since the snow and ice blowing off the vehicle can hit another vehicle, possibly causing damage. When removing snow, residents are reminded to keep snow off the windows and lights of the vehicle.
Roadways may still be slippery from ice, snow, and other roadway material, thus making it extremely important for drivers to refrain from using cell phones, drinking warm beverages, or engaging in any other activity that would slow your reaction time in the event of your vehicle losing traction.
It is important to remember to keep a safe distance from vehicles in case you must suddenly stop.
Do not leave your vehicle running unattended. It is against the law and provides temptation for someone to steal your vehicle. If parking your vehicle in a garage, make sure there is adequate ventilation for exhaust fumes to escape.
