COUDERSPORT – Eight Curwensville Area High School wrestlers posted winning records as the Golden Tide won three of five matches in the sixth annual Coudersport Duals Saturday.
Coach Duane Wriglesworth’s squad handled Coudersport 55-16, Cameron County 43-23 and Sheffield 59-12 and lost to Johnsonburg 37-28 and Penns Valley 52-23 to emerge with a 3-2 log.
Pacing the Golden Tide was Derek Brothers, who won all five of his bouts and was a contender for the most pins award with four falls to go with a technical fall.
The senior 125-pounder, now 11-1, wasted no time with three of his opponents, decking Coudersport’s Daniel Chilson in 20 seconds, Johnsonburg’s Cody Schreiber in 20 seconds and Sheffield’s Travis Mosher in 37 seconds. He needed 1:01 to flatten Cameron County’s Caleb Hauss and earned the technical fall against Penns Valley’s Joseph McNitt with one second remaining in the second period.
“Derek hasn’t been a pinner, but we’ve seen him go after the falls this year,” Wriglesworth said. “We’re really pleased he’s working more for falls.”
Jordan Russell also was 5-0, but four of the freshman 103-pounder’s wins came via forfeits. He did register his first on-the-mat victory by pinning Cameron County’s Crosby Chris in 1:38.
Junior 112-pounder Greg Koptchak, who has been sidelined by a wrist injury, received two forfeits.
Wes McGarry at 145 and Alex Holland at 160 and 171 matched 4-1 records. Holland engineered three falls, while McGarry had two pins and a major decision.
Kyle Kyler at 152, Jonathan Michaels at 189 and Brian Zemba at 215 and 285 checked in at 3-2.
“We were really happy with Kyler,” Wriglesworth said. “He’s still battling an injury.
“Two of Michaels’ wins were falls, and I was happy to see that from Jonathan, ” Wriglesworth said. “He was winless and kind of down on himself.
“And Zemba also had two falls.”
Falling just short of having a winning day were Alex Holt and Hunter McCracken, who competed at 130 and 135, Brett Sutika at 140 and Chad Desmett at 171 and 189, all at 2-3.
“Sutika has been having a tough time,” Wriglesworth said. “He’s just been running into some really tough competition, but all of his matches have been close.”
One of Sutika’s losses was 3-2 to Johnsonburg’s Zac Wolfe in a rideout. Sutika opted for the bottom position, only to have the Ram control him for 30 seconds. He also was nipped 1-0 by Penns Valley’s Neil Hosterman and 4-2 by Cameron County’s Dom Manginell.
Desmett and freshman 119-pounder Nathan Wriglesworth picked up their first varsity wins.
“Overall, it was a good day for us,” Duane Wriglesworth said.
Penns Valley 145-pounder Drew Zettle won the award for the most falls in the least amount of time with five first-period pins.
In the two biggest bouts, two-time PIAA Class AA champion and Penn State recruit Dirk Cowburn of Coudersport handed Bradford junior Mark Havers his first loss 5-3 at 160 and then moved up to 171 to take on Lewisburg’s Nathaniel Brown and was shut out 5-0. Cowburn was ranked first in the state and No. 6 in the nation going into the tourney.
Havers (20-1) was a silver medalist in Class AAA and Brown (13-0) a bronze medalist in Class AA at last year’s state tournament.
Penns Valley swept its five matches, while Bradford was 4-1, Lewisburg joined Curwensville at 3-2, Johnsonburg and Cameron County were 2-3, Coudersport 1-4 and Sheffield 0-5.
Curwensville’s lone meet this week will be its home opener against Redbank Valley Wednesday.
