Dec. 26 Clearfield-Jefferson ARC Notes

The American Red Cross would like to wish everyone a Happy, Safe and Healthy New Year. Remember to appoint a designated driver if you are planning to travel on New Year’s Eve.

Winter can be rough on pets. The following tips are suggested to help your pets avoid cold weather dangers:
• Never leave your pet outside when the temperature drops dramatically and always keep very young or older pets inside. Short haired animals should wear a coat or sweater during walks;
• Animals should be kept inside during winter, but if you have “outside pet” make sure that their house is weatherproofed. It should be draft-free with an elevated base. Use waterproof materials and make sure the door faces away from brutal northern winds and is equipped with a flap for protection from the elements;
• Be sure to store antifreeze in sealed containers and clean up any spills. Antifreeze is appealing to animals, but the ethylene glycol it contains is extremely toxic;
• Salt & deicing chemicals cannot only irritate your pets’ paws, it can be toxic if they lick their feet;
• Take special precautions if you live near a stream or pond. Countless animals down in partially frozen water;
• Cats seek relief from the cold in warm car engines. Before starting your car, band on your hood or tap your horn;
• Animals left outside unprotected can suffer frostbite or hypothermia. Seek veterinary care immediately if this occurs to your pet. If this is impossible, keep the animal warm and dry and transport to the veterinarian as soon as possible.
Please remember these tips as our pets are part of our families and need to be treated as family members.

Red Cross is a United Way and United Fund Participating Agency and RSVP Station.

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
Disaster financial assistance averages from $1500 to $2000 for a family of four for immediate emergency needs. Won’t you help meet those needs through your donation to your local American Red Cross? Checks may be sent to Clearfield-Jefferson Chapter, 1100 S. Second St. Suite 2, Clearfield, Pa 16830, or Clearfield-Jefferson Chapter, 18 Western Ave, Brookville, Pa 15825. VISA and MasterCard are accepted.
