FLINTON – The Lady Vikings of Glendale unwrapped an early Christmas present Wednesday night on their home court with a 60-33 victory over the visiting Lady Tide of Curwensville.
The defeat keeps the Lady Tide winless at 0-4 on the 2009-10 campaign while Glendale grabs their first win of the year running their mark to 1-3 under head coach John Matchock, now in his seventh year at the helm.
Curwensville head coach Rusty McCracken said afterwards, “We seem to be a little self-destructive at times. We just have to settle down and start to control things.” Then the first year coach added, “I was very pleased with the stretch we had their in the second quarter when we cut their lead to only four.”
Glendale jumped out to a quick 9-0 first quarter run with the Tide not scoring until the 3:13 mark with Tess Bloom hitting two free throws.
The Vikings continued to build on their 15-8 first period margin before the Curwensville girls made a run to cut the Viking lead to 19-15 with just a few minutes to go in the half. Unfortunately Glendale went on a 12-4 run to march into half-time leading 31-19.
Glendale continued their dominance in the second half with 16 in the third period and another 13 in the fourth.
On the evening the Vikings made seven three pointers with senior Brooke Legrand knocking down four treys to lead all scorers with 17.
McCracken talked about the three pointers by Glendale, “They were really hot from the outside, which I feel did us in.”
Morgan Biddle assisted with 16 points of her own as nine Vikings got involved in putting points on the scoreboard.
Bloom was the leading scorer for Curwensville with 16. The senior point guard was 10 of 16 from the charity stripe. In all Curwensville made 17 of 24 from the free throw line.
The good night from the line wasn’t lost on McCracken, “We work on free throws every day in practice and we count on them to get us some points and keep us in the game.”
Nine players also ended up scoring for the Lady Tide in the loss.
The Lady Vikings junior varsity made it a clean sweep on the evening as they drubbed Curwensville 40-14.
The Lady Tide won’t play again until 2010 when they host the Harmony Lady Owls on Monday, January 4. JV action starts at 6 pm with the varsity contest to immediately follow.
