HARRISBURG – Readers of Central Penn Parent magazine recently voted the Pennsylvania Farm Show the Best Local Festival in the mid-state, acting Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding announced. The award is part of the publication’s annual Family Favorite Awards issue.
“For the past 93 years, the Pennsylvania Farm Show has been one of the premier agricultural events, not only in the state, but on the entire East Coast,” said Redding. “We are thrilled that readers of Central Penn Parent also recognize the Farm Show’s place as a great local event where the entire family can be engaged, educated and entertained.”
The Pennsylvania Farm Show beat out more than 40 other nominees for best local festival honors.
“We are excited about this special recognition for the Pennsylvania Farm Show, as it is voted on by local families,” Redding added. “The show provides a unique opportunity for the department to showcase what is new in agriculture and celebrate the role it plays in our everyday lives.
“In addition, the Farm Show emphasizes agricultural education for young people. From our 4-H and FFA exhibitors to the families and school students who visit, the show is a great way to learn about agriculture and our state.”
A popular learning tool for children is the Farm Show Detectives program. Families and visitors of all ages can visit nearly 20 interactive learning stations located throughout the Farm Show. From learning where milk comes from, to watching chicks hatch, stations can be found using a special map or by looking for a lamppost and signage.
The 94th Pennsylvania Farm Show is scheduled for Jan. 9-16, 2010. For more information, visit www.farmshow.state.pa.us.
