STATE COLLEGE – Clearfield split a fall baseball double-header with State College Sunday, building a big lead and holding on for a 7-5 win in the opener before suffering a tough 2-0 loss at Community Field.
Kurtis Krise saved the first game for Trevor Flanagan, who fashioned four shutout innings before the hosts threatened to wipe out a 7-5 deficit.
Krise stepped into a one-out, bases-loaded situation with the score 7-3. He walked one batter and hit another to force in two runs before getting out of the jam. Then, he settled down and limited State College to one hit over the final two frames, ending up with three strikeouts.
Flanagan, charged with all five runs, struck out four while giving up six hits and three walks.
Jarrett Fulmer and Garrett Samsel had a pair of hits apiece for Clearfield. Fulmer and Krise, who drove in two runs, socked doubles.
Colin Muthler had two doubles for State College.
In the nightcap, Clearfield starter Derrick Snyder was saddled with the defeat in spite of surrendering just one hit and two walks in five innings.
Cameron Walls belted a long home run for the game\’s only runs after Snyder, who struck out three, issued a two-out free pass in the fifth.
Ronny Ogden pitched a scoreless sixth, allowing one hit.
Brandon Auman, who worked only two innings after closing out the first game, and winner Alex Karos combined for a four-hitter.
Snyder doubled for Clearfield (6-7), which will make the long trek to Northumberland Saturday for an 11 a.m. double-header against the Susquehanna Tornadoes, a travel team of players from eight schools.
Coach Sid Lansberry is hoping to schedule what would be a season-ending twinbill for Sunday afternoon.
