CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, Inc., in partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), is offering area individuals aged 50 and older the opportunity to take the AARP Driver Safety Course. The classroom course was developed by AARP to help drivers remain safe on today’s roads while providing the bonus of a multi-year discount on the course-graduates’ car insurance.
The eight hour class is being held in two sessions: Thursday, September 3 and Thursday September 17, from 12:30 to 4:30 each day, at the Clearfield Center for Active Living located at 103 North Front Street in Clearfield. Pre-registration is required for the course.
The course is designed to meet the specific needs of older drivers covering age-related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road, local driving problems, and license renewal requirements. RSVP volunteer instructors, trained by AARP, will conduct the course, which is presented through a combination of video presentations and group discussion.
All automobile insurance companies conducting business in Pennsylvania are required to provide a premium discount to graduates of the DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM who are 55 years of age and older. Couples who both have a driver’s license are each required to be certified in the program in order to be eligible for the discount. Although geared to drivers 50 and over, the class is open to all ages and AARP membership is not a requirement.
The cost of both days’ instruction and classroom materials is $14, with AARP members paying a discounted price of $12. Checks are to be made payable to AARP and are to be given to the instructor on the first day of class. Class size is limited and the required reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis, so early sign-up is suggested.
