Mother Nature finally cooperated and gave fans fantastic weather for a great night of racing at Hummingbird Speedway. The track celebrated Racing Pioneers’ Night and the 45th anniversary of its original opening (on June 20, 1964), both events which were postponed from the previous week due to inclement weather.
The racing program began with several make-up features from two weeks ago, when things were halted partway through due to rain. The Pure Stocks were the first event to hit the track, picking up where they left off on lap 5 with Bruce Hartzfeld leading. As the green flag flew, Hartzfeld began to stretch out his lead as 6 cars ran side-by-side for spots behind him. After several early cautions, it was Hartzfeld at the halfway point, followed by Matt Heindl, Jeremy Buck, Zack Gustafson, and Bob Alcorn. Buck dropped off the pace with 2 laps to go, and at the end it was Hartzfeld holding off Heindl for his second win of the year. Alcorn, Mike VanZandt, and John Barley rounded out the top five.
After several heats, the Front-Wheel Drive Four Cylinders ran their make-up feature from June 13th. Aaron Luzier and Chuck White started on the point, and Luzier led lap one. He was overtaken by White on the next lap, and they ran one and two at halfway. White had to work through heavy lapped traffic late in the race, and became the first repeat winner in the class so far this season. He was followed by Luzier, Bryan Warren, Ben Smith, and Mike Lucas.
After the rest of the heat races were run, former drivers from the 1960s and 70s who were in attendance were recognized. There were a number of old-time race cars on display, and they ran laps at intermission, and then were parked on the front-stretch where all the “pioneers” gathered for a group photo.
When racing resumed, the Four Cylinders were the first feature up, with Devin Lewis and Don Henry leading the field to Starter Bob Sullinger’s green flag. Henry grabbed the early led and began to pull away. But Adam Nixon closed the gap by lap six and got by Henry, only to have the caution fly, giving Henry the top spot back. Nixon was able to make the pass for the lead again when the green flag flew, and stretched his lead out late as Aaron Henry took the second spot away from his father. At the checkered it was Nixon, A. Henry, D. Henry, Mike Anderson, and Paul Metz Jr. Heats were won by A. Henry and Mike Anderson.
Next up were the Street Stocks, with Gary Little and Steve Cook leading the way. Little lead the early laps, with Bill Henney close on his tail. The two battled for the lead until they made contact in turn three. On the restart, Cook inherited the lead as Bob Connor and Orin Taylor battled side-by-side for the second spot. Connor took second and closed on Cook. The leader received heavy pressure, but was able to hold off the challenges until the last lap, where Connor was able to get under Cook. They made contact coming through turn four for the checkered flag, and Connor took the win. Cook was able to hang on for second, as he, Joe Kot, and Orin Taylor all came across the line in an exciting finish. Henney and Little were able to work their way back up front for the next two spots. Jamie Price, Bob Connor, and Bill Henney were the heat race winners.
Bill Davis and Denny Fenton brought the Limited Late Models trackside for their feature event. Something broke on the front of Fenton’s car as he came out of turn four on the first lap and he spun in front of the entire field. Remarkably, everyone scrambled to avoid him, but he was unable to continue. Bob McMillen took the lead early and Cody Schultz followed, as Luke Hoffner worked on Schultz for second. McMillen led at the halfway point, followed by Schultz and Hoffner, with Derek Rodkey, Jake Shady, and Dwayne Brooks putting on a good show battling for fourth. In the end it was McMillen grabbing his first victory of the year. Schulz held off Hoffner by inches for second. Rodkey, Shady, and Brooks followed. Dwayne Brooks and Luke Hoffner took the two qualifying heat races.
The Pure Stock feature began with Mike Van Zandt and Fran Gustafson scheduled to start on the front row. Gustafson elected to tail the field instead, giving the outside front row position to Jeremy Buck. Buck held the lead by just inches over VanZandt for the first two laps. After a spin by Josh Fields, Buck was able to stretch out his lead on the restart. As the race drew to the halfway mark, it was Buck, VanZandt, Bruce Hartzfeld, Shawn Hadden, and Bob Alcorn. Buck pulled away near the end for his first win of the season, as VanZandt, Alcorn, Hartzfeld, and Nathan Yeaney battled for position and finished in that order behind him. Nathan Yeaney, Bob Alcorn, and Josh Fields won the heats.
The Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders closed out the evening’s program with Rich Lucas and Mike Lucas bringing the field to the line. After a caution and complete restart, the red flag flew as Melvin Wisor made hard contact with Chad Desmett in turn two. When racing resumed, Mitch Kohler had the lead but was overtaken by Ben Smith. Smith’s lead was short-lived when the caution flag flew for a spin by Dustin Kemp and Smith’s engine expire under the yellow, handing the lead back over to Kohler. Kenny White worked the outside line to take over the top spot, and he led at halfway, followed by Aaron Luzier, Bryan Warren, Chuck White, and Kohler. Following several cautions, Warren and Luzier were able to close the gap on White. Warren took the lead away with two laps to go. Luzier also got by White, and Warren was able to hold off Luzier for his second win of the season. Qualifying race wins went to Mike Lucas, Ben Smith, Chuck White, and Aaron Luzier, while Jacob Kline won the consi.
100 racecars were in the pits, with 17 Limited Late Models, 17 Street Stocks, 13 Four Cylinders, 24 Pure Stocks, and 29 Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders. Racing resumes next Saturday with a regular five-division program and celebration of Independence Day. For further information, visit the track’s website at www.hummingbirdspeedway.com.
