HYDE – Idle for almost a week because of too many players on vacations or other trips, the Clearfield American Legion Post No. 6 baseball team began a stretch of 11 games in eight days Sunday against a hard-hitting Bellefonte lineup and dropped the non-league twinbill 16-2 in six innings and 15-0 in five frames at the Bison Sports Complex.
The Chiefs still were short-handed, five regulars not available, and were victims of a two-pitcher perfect game in the nightcap after being limited to five hits by Jake Perryman and Matt Watson.
Eric Tressler and Jordan Schainholz combined for the perfecto. Tressler struck out four in two innings, while Schainholz fanned six in picking up the win.
The Bandits (4-1), led by several returnees from college as well as members of the Bellefonte Area High School team that reached the PIAA Class AAA semifinals earlier this month, amassed 36 hits.
In the opener, every Bandit had at least two singles and one run batted in, with winning pitcher Perryman\’s four singles pacing the 23-hit attack.
Brandon Quay, Schainholz and Eric Regel had three hits apiece. Quay homered and drove in four runs. Schainholz and Regel had doubles and pairs of RBIs.
Robert Gummo also homered and joined Zach Moerschbacher with two RBIs.
All Bandit starters also hit safely in the second game, Matt Fisher the big gun with a double, a home run and five RBIs.
Frank Parkes belted a two-run homer and two singles, while Tressler drove in three runs.
First-time starters Wes McGarry and Tyler Jacobson took the losses for the Chiefs.
Clearfield (4-6) returns to Jefferson County League action Monday with an 8 o\’clock game at Brookville.
The Chiefs will entertain Reynoldsville Tuesday and DuBois Thursday in 6 p.m. JCL games before playing four times at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Field Friday and Saturday as one of the seven host teams for the Bellefonte Showdown. The wood bat tourney has attracted 30 teams from five states and Canada.
