DUBOIS – The DuBois City Council acknowledged the number of accidents that occur at the Stockdale Street intersection with East Scribner Avenue at Monday night’s regular meeting. The council has opted to make the intersection a three-way stop.
Council members followed through with a proposal that Stephanie Rindosh made at its last work session. They believed that the first step would be the addition of stop signs, where the one way and two way streets meet.
After visiting the intersection, the council said that a tree, which was determined to be dead, will be cut down.
At the same intersection, council members had another plan presented for the removal of two parking spots along East Scribner Avenue, as it would allow for greater visibility. However, it resulted in protests from Tim Bodt.
Bodt stated that the problem was the result of drivers who were traveling too fast along Scribner Avenue. He said that instead the council could place stop signs at every block in order to slow down the drivers who were traveling from that direction. His defense for the parking was if the two spaces were eliminated, they “might as well condemn Scribner Avenue.”
Council member Diane Bernardo expressed a desire to not remove any more parking from the city if it could be avoided.
Police Chief Steve Davis also said most accidents involved vehicles that had been traveling on Stockdale Street in a direction, where the parking spaces if filled wouldn’t change.
“We definitely have to try something,” explained Mayor and Acting City Manager John Suplizio.
The council left open the possibility of removing a parking space or two if the number of accidents does not decrease. They indicated that a home, which is located next to both spaces, has parking available on its property.
