HYDE – The Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team split a pair of non-league games at the Bison Sports Complex Saturday afternoon, beating Fox Township 12-3 and losing to Bradford 22-7.
Two home games booked for Sunday, a non-league scrap with Marion Center and a Jefferson County League showdown with Punxsutawney, were postponed because the Clearfield Area High School team will be playing Punxsy for the District 9 Class AAA championship Wednesday.
Against Fox Township, 15 Chiefs stepped into the batter\’s box in the first inning, and 11 runs came around to score.
Tanner St. Clair triggered the uprising with a three-run home run after Jarrin Campman walked and Justin Hoffman singled.
Other key blows were a two-run single by Campman and a two-run double by Corey Bookhamer, who had three of Clearfield\’s nine hits.
Chad Zurat worked five innings for the Chiefs\’ first win of the season, giving up seven hits and six walks but keeping the visitors off the scoreboard except for a three-run fifth. The right-hander notched six strikeouts.
Aaron Sayers blanked Fox Township in the sixth before the game was halted because of time constraints.
Bob Vollmer and Brett Quiggle had two hits apiece for the losers.
Bradford, boasting several returnees from the 2008 Region 8 and state runner-up team, pounced 19 hits off a trio of Clearfield hurlers and scored at least two runs in every inning except the third.
Brandon Slater was the big gun with four hits, including a home run and a double, and five runs batted in. He also started on the mound and pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Cory Viola, Ryan Austin and Kevin Paulter each had two hits and three RBIs, while Lou Jones, Mike Pascarella and Drew Kelly added two hits apiece.
Petal Harrah, the second of six Bradford hurlers, picked up the victory.
Bookhamer had a pair of run-scoring singles for Clearfield (1-2). Luke Peterson picked up two RBIs with a double and a bases-loaded walk.
The loss was charged to Trevor Flanagan, who departed with two outs in the first inning when he was hit by a shot off Austin\’s bat.
Manager Sid Lansberry\’s Chiefs, whose JCL game at DuBois Wednesday also has been postponed because of the scholastic playoffs, will host Philipsburg in a non-league game Friday at 6 p.m.
