CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville high school baseball team won it’s third straight game Tuesday afternoon as they traveled to DuBois and beat DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) 8-4.
The game was originally scheduled for Curwensville, but due to poor field conditions the game was moved to DCC. The return match is set for Wednesday at Curwensville. If the Golden Tide field still isn’t in playing condition the game will be moved to DuBois once again, weather permitting, with a 4:00 pm start.
The victory has the Golden Tide jumping their season record to 9-3 and to 5-3 in the District 9 Northern Allegany League Small School Division Southern Tier.
Ben McGary of the Tide went the distance to pick up his third win of the year, even though he gave up 11 hits. McGary had his strikeout pitch working though as the senior whiffed twelve Cardinal hitters to offset those 11 hits while walking none. The 11 hits the DCC squad picked up were all singles.
McGary also had a big day at the plate, going four for four, all singles, and scoring two runs. Head coach Ryan Briskar of Curwensville said afterwards, “Ben McGary had his “A” game going today as a pitcher and as a hitter. He pitched great and hit the ball very well.”
The Tide scored in each of the first three innings but found themselves only up by one, 5-4, after three. McGary settled in the rest of the way, holding the Cardinals scoreless over the final four frames.
Senior designated hitter, Derek Dixon, had another good day for the Tide with two hits and two RBI\’s. His first on the afternoon was a two-run homer in the top of the second inning. Briskar spoke about Dixon, “Derek is making the most of his opportunities at the plate as he had another homer that kept us going.”
Also driving in two runs for Curwensville was Jed Greslick and Mark Dell’Antonio. Greslick had a two out, two run double in the fifth to give the Tide a cushion.
Cory Bloom, Tide catcher, and Sam Gardner, playing center field, each had doubles bringing more praise from Briskar, “Jed (Greslick) had a big hit today for us with that two out, 2-run double and Cory (Bloom) hit the ball very well but only had one hit to show for it.”
The Cardinals were led offensively by designated hitter Ian Reinhart and left fielder John Ferraraccio who each had three hits while Kyle Mann and Dante Desantis had two.
Kelcey Gulvas pitched the final 2 and 1/3 innings for DCC and blanked the Tide the remainder of the game, giving up no hits and only one walk.
Briskar finished up by saying, “Everyone contributed to a good team victory today.”
