RIDGWAY – Whether at home or on the road the Curwensville Lady Tide softball team remains perfect with a 9-0 season mark for 2009. In the league with perhaps the longest name in Pennsylvania the Tide are 6-0.
On a beautiful sunny and warm Monday afternoon the Lady Tide ventured north to Ridgway and returned home with a 17-3 blasting of the Lady Elkers in a District 9 Northern Allegany Small School Division Southern Tier challenge. Curwensville had already shut out Ridgway earlier this season 10-0.
The game was a milestone for two Lady Tide seniors as shortstop Shannon McDonald and pitcher Holly Lansberry reached the 100 hit category for their careers. McDonald stroked a single to right field in the second inning and Lansberry a single to center field in the fourth to put their stamp on softball history.
Coach Allen Leigey of the Lady Tide said, “That’s really great for Holly and Shannon. Both of them are very hard workers and are truly deserving. They now join their teammate Ashley (Demchak) in the very exclusive 100 hit club.”
The Lady Tide for the first time all year gave up runs to their opposition. That of course didn’t matter as Curwensville had it’s biggest offensive output of the season with the 17 runs they put on the board against Ridgway.
Jenessa Stiles, another Tide senior had one of those dream afternoons at the plate. The Curwensville third baseman went four for four with a double and a triple while driving in six runs. Stiles had a bases loaded triple in the first and a third inning double for another RBI to pace the Curwensville offense.
Leigey was somewhat in awe, “Wow, Jenessa (Stiles) was all over the ball today. She came with her bat ready and really hit the ball well to say the least. That was a very special game for a very deserving player of ours.”
The final score was the only question as Curwensville built a huge 15-0 lead after only three at-bats to assure the win.
Lansberry is also 9-0 on the 2009 campaign. The runs scored against her were the first of the season. The Lady Tide hurler had gone 46 straight innings without allowing a run. The three the Elkers scored on the day were all unearned keeping Lansberry’s ERA at 0.00.
On Tuesday the Lady Tide hit the road again. This time it is off to St. Marys to meet up with the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic at 4:15 pm. The Crusaders are 4-2 in the “long name” league as of this writing.
The heat picks up some says Leigey, “Now we have to gear up for a really good Elk County Catholic team. What happened today is over. As long as we stay focused we should be fine.”
