CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville high school baseball squad knocked off visiting Johnsonburg Monday afternoon in less than ideal weather conditions, 4-2.
With the win the Tide move to 2-1 on the season and in the newly formed District 9 Northern Allegany League Small School Division Southern Tier.
Curwensville’s Sam Gardner went the distance in picking up the win. Gardner gave up just one earned run while striking out eight and walking just one. The junior just needed 84 pitches to take care of the Rams.
Johnsonburg took a 1-0 lead after one inning only to have the Tide score two in the bottom of the second to go out in front 2-1. Cory Bloom and Gardner had back to back singles to start the second and later scored on another single by Mark Dell’Antonio and a sacrifice by Jed Greslick.
Curwensville head coach Ryan Briskar was glad to see his offense come around, “We played a much better offensive game today than our last time out. That’s because we put the bat on the ball and made things happen.”
The Rams would tie the game at two with a run in the top of the third but Curwensville would score what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
Wes McGarry lead off the bottom of the third for the Golden Tide with a walk and would later score on a single by catcher Cory Bloom.
Curwensville would score an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Dell’Antonio smacked a lead off double and would score later on a sacrifice fly to center by pinch hitter Derek Brothers.
The Tide return to action Wednesday on the road at DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) with a 4:15 pm start.
The District 9 Northern Allegany League Small School Division Southern Tier is made up of Curwensville, Brockway, Kane, DCC, Ridgway, Johnsonburg and Elk County Catholic.
