HARRISBURG – The lights on the Capitol Dome will go dark for one hour beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, in observance of Earth Hour—a global initiative to help draw attention to the need to conserve energy and address climate change.
“Governor Rendell has directed that we turn off the exterior lights on the Capitol Dome for 60 minutes on Saturday evening to show the commonwealth’s support of Earth Hour,” said Department of General Services Secretary James. P. Creedon.
“Pennsylvania is recognized as a national leader when it comes to conserving energy in our state office buildings and we will continue to do all we can to further reduce energy consumption and protect the environment by reducing harmful emissions.”
Earth Hour is the World Wildlife Fund’s campaign to raise awareness that wasting energy also wastes money and impacts the environment. Earth Hour originated in Australia in 2007. The fund expanded the event globally in 2008 when an estimated 50 million people participated. This year, the goal is more than one billion participants worldwide.
