Holmes Catches Clincher In Closing Seconds; Lifts Steelers Over Cards In Super Bowl
Matt Aug – AHN Sports Editor
Tampa, FL (AHN) – Santonio Holmes hauled in a six-yard pass in the corner of the end zone, dragged both toes inbounds and helped the Pittsburgh Steelers capture their NFL-best sixth Super Bowl crown with a 27-23 edging of the Arizona Cardinals Sunday.
The play, with 35 seconds left, capped a wild fourth quarter in which the Cardinals overcame a 20-7 deficit to take a 23-20 lead on wideout Larry Fitzgerald’s 64-yard touchdown connection from quarterback Kurt Warner at the 2:37 mark.
As Cardinals coach Ken Whisehunt later noted, that was too much time left for a seasoned Ben Roethlisberger (21-of-30, 256 yards, touchdown) and his offensive mates.
The Steelers calmly drove 78 yards in just eight plays in just over two minutes for the winning score, leaving the Cardinals with little time in their bid for a first Super Bowl crown.
