CLEARFIELD – Residents of Clearfield County who need to pay taxes to the county’s assessment office may have the ability to do that with a credit card in the future.
The Clearfield County Commissioners, County Controller Claudia Read and Jennifer Wooster of the County Tax Claims/Assessment Office discussed the matter on Tuesday at a Clearfield County Commissioners work session.
Wooster said the company who will provide the service will charge a 2.5 percent processing fee. So if resident needed to pay $100 and was agreeable to using the credit card machine, an additional $2.50 would be charged. The $2.50 would then go to the company.
Commissioner Mark McCracken asked County Solicitor Kim Kesner if there was any legal issue with the processing fee. Kesner said that he did not believe so.
“You’re providing an accommodation to you customers,” said Kesner. “They don’t have to use this.”
Kesner added that one of his biggest issues with the contract was a provision that would bind the county to Georgia state law. Kesner asked Wooster to contact the company and have them omit that or change it to Pennsylvania state law.
