OSWEGO, N.Y. – Army 149-pounder Matt Kyler of Clearfield was named 40th annual New York State Championships Outstanding Wrestler after pinning his way to the finals and then winning his third title Saturday.
The top-seeded Cadet junior, who ruled at 141 the last two years, racked up falls against Jamestown Community College\’s Max Murray in 1:25, Hunter\’s Vitaly Simkin in 6:17, Brockport\’s James Forsyth in 1:04 and Ithaca\’s Blane Woszczak in 1:08 before beating Buffalo\’s Desi Green 5-1 for the gold medal.
Casey Thome (141) and Richard Starks (197) also earned titles for Army, which had three runners-up and finished second with 162.5, six behind champion Buffalo, in the 18-team field.
Kyler, 27-4 with 15 falls, went into the two-day tourney ranked No. 8 by Wrestler Insider Magazine, No. 9 by Amateur Wrestling News and No. 11 by USA Today/InterMat/National Wrestling Coaches Association.

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Sophomore 141-pounder Tom Barger of Clearfield posted Lycoming\’s lone bonus point decision Friday when the 24th-ranked Warriors were upended 20-13 by host and 27th-ranked Messiah.
Barger major decisioned Domineak Commodore 9-1 to raise his dual-meet record to 9-4.
He is 11-6 overall with five major decisions for the 10-6 Warriors.

ERIE, Pa. – In a showdown between the top two ranked 165-pounders in NCAA Division II Friday, Pitt-Johnstown\’s Kyle Keane of Bradford (Clearfield Area High School) was shut out 7-0 by Mercyhurst\’s Josh Shields.
Both were All-Americans last year, Keane fourth at 165 and Shields fourth at 174 as a redshirt freshman.
Keane went into the bout 14-6 and No. 1. Shields was 10-3, and the solid win earned the 2006 PIAA runner-up from Burrell the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week honors.
On Sunday, Keane edged Gannon\’s Bret Terry 5-4 to set his dual-meet record at 5-3.
UPJ, ranked No. 11 in Division II, climbed to 6-3 by sweeping Mercyhurst 31-6 and Gannon 28-12.

MEN\’S SWIMMING & DIVING
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A double-winner in both meets, junior John Lytle of Clearfield was one of the bright spots for Notre Dame in losses to Northwestern 175-125 Friday and Oakland (Mich.) 161.5-137.5 Saturday.
He touched first in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.96 seconds and the 100 free in 45.37 against visiting Northwestern, and he came back to win the 100 free in 45.93 and the 200 free in 1:40.91 at Oakland.
In relay races, Lytle led off for the 800 free team and anchored the 200 free quartet that placed second and third, respectively, against Northwestern and posted a 21.41 leadoff leg for the runner-up 200 free relay foursome at Oakland.
Lytle has 14 firsts and one tie for first in individual competition. He\’s helped Fighting Irish relay teams to six victories.
Notre Dame\’s dual meet record is 3-6.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Brandon Good of Clearfield had a good week for Lycoming with a win and three high finishes in individual events and helping relay teams to a victory and two high finishes.
The Warriors swept King\’s 81-36 and Fairleigh Dickinson U-Florham 81-23 on Jan. 14 at Wilkes-Barre, Lebanon Valley 146-107 Saturday at Annville and Ursinus 112-90 Sunday for a 6-3 record.
Good won the 50-yard freestyle in the tri-meet with King\’s and FDU-Florham by touching the wall in a season-best 24.28 seconds and turned in a 25.48 butterfly leg for the second-place 200 medley relay team.
At Lebanon Valley, he was third in the 200 fly in 2:40.67 and had a 28.36 fly leg for the 200 medley foursome that finished third.
Good placed second in the 50 free in 23.79 and third in the 100 free in 53.93 against Ursinus before swimming a 23.18 second leg for the 200 free relay quartet that clinched the win over Ursinus.

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Diver Ryan Sayers of Frenchville (Clearfield Area H.S.) was one of four Washington & Jefferson seniors honored at the Presidents\’ final meet in Henry Memorial Natatorium Saturday.
He placed third in both events, earning 185.60 points off the one-meter board and 168.25 off the three-meter board.
Grove City spoiled Senior Day for W & J with a 156-137 victory in the Presidents\’ Athletic Conference meet.
The Presidents are 5-3 with a 2-1 PAC record.

NEW WILIMINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore twins John and Chris Bodle contributed points to once-beaten Westminster\’s fifth win, 106-87 over Mount Union (Ohio) Saturday.
John placed third in the 200-yard butterfly in a personal-best 2:6.86 and fifth in the 400 individual medley in 4:45.21.
Chris set a personal best in the 400 IM by finishing fourth in 4:41.49.

MEN\’S BASKETBALL
GREENSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Todd Hryn of Clearfield matched his career-highs with 11 points and a team-high six rebounds in Pitt-Greensburg\’s 80-70 win over visiting Hilbert in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action Jan. 14.
All of his points came in the first 18 minutes as the Bobcats evened their AMCC record for the third time this season at 3-3.
On Saturday, Hryn had seven points, two rebounds and one steal at Pitt-Bradford, which dropped UPG to 4-10 overall with an 84-71 victory.
In 13 games, including four starts, Hryn has 65 points, a 5.0 average, and 30 rebounds. He also has five assists and two steals.

WOMEN\’S BASKETBALL
DUBOIS, Pa. – Sophomore Brittany Barrett of Mahaffey (Curwensville Area H.S.) scored six points and grabbed three rebounds as Penn State-DuBois rolled past PSU-Wilkes-Barre 64-42 Saturday.
The Lady Lions outscored the visitors 36-12 in the second half for their fourth win in five games, boosting their record to 3-4 in the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference West Division and 5-7 overall.
Missy Aul of St. Marys led the Lady Lions with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
