WINGATE – Annie Janocko paced a balanced offense with 16 points as the Clearfield Area High School girls basketball team downed Jersey Shore 66-54 Saturday in the first round of the Bald Eagle Area Holiday Tournament.
Janocko made six field goals in seven shots and was perfect in four trips to the foul line for the Lady Bisons, who will take a 3-2 record into Monday\’s 6:30 p.m. championship game against the host Lady Eagles. BEA trimmed Moshannon Valley 54-39 in the nightcap.
Jayme Ryan netted four shots from beyond the arc and finished with 14 points, and Sarah Kovalick hit a pair of three-pointers to contribute 10 points for Clearfield. Point guard Gwenn Porter also had a three-pointer among her nine points.
\”Ryan had two three-pointers in the first quarter to get us going,\” Clearfield coach Joey Castagnolo said.
The Lady Bisons, who led 16-10 after one period and 32-22 at the half, launched 20 treys and shot a blistering 45.1 percent overall, canning 23 of 51 shots.
\”We played really well, and I thought the big difference was the three-point shooting,\” Clearfield coach Joey Castagnolo said. \”They don\’t look to shoot threes, and we do. We scouted them, and they had only two threes in their other games, so we packed in our zone.\”
That strategy was designed to shut down Julia Stevenson, but the Lady Bulldogs\’ 6-1 standout still managed to pump in 26 points.
\”She has a nice lefthanded touch,\” Castagnolo said, adding that Stevenson probably is the best post player the Lady Bisons will face this season.
The Lady Bulldogs, now 3-4, got 13 points from Tanya Siford, who accounted for both of their treys.
In junior varsity action earlier in the afternoon, Jersey Shore squeezed past Clearfield 37-35. Angela Moore had nine points and Kristen Butler added eight for the Lady Bisons.
