It\’s always tougher the second time you play a team, especially when you play them for the second time in less than two weeks. Clearfield was able to fight off a late Harmony run and come away with an 80-68 victory in the first round of the Purchase Line Lions Club Holiday Tournament.
\”We didn\’t play our best game tonight. We played sloppy, but we were still able to come away with a win. We are 4-0 now, but we definately have to start playing better basketball,\” said Clearfield Head Coach Forrest Campman.
The Bisons got the scoring started early with senior guards Matt Shiner and Parker Herrington leading the Bisons with 29 and 16 points respectively. Clearfield\’s hot shooting put them up 25-17 at the end of the first period and would lead the rest of the game.
\”Matt had a good first half tonight, he shot the ball really well. Parker also had a good game offensively tonight and took care of the ball,\” said Campman.
Shiner continued to knock down open shot after open shot in the first half helping the Bisons increase their lead to 45-31 at the intermission. Clearfield\’s bench gave great minutes all game outplaying the Harmony bench due much to the help of Jeremy Priester and Chad Zurat who chipped in with eight and seven points.
\”Our bench provided us with a lot of depth tonight. We outplayed their bench and that was a huge difference in the game. We needed the bench to play well tonight to make up for the play of some of our starters, and they did a good job,\” commented Campman.
Harmony provided problems for Clearfield\’s Jarrin Campman, who entered the game averaging over 18 points a game, holding him to a season low four points. Senior Cruise Kerr and junior Trey Campman picked up the slack for the struggling Campman and put up their highest point totals of the season with six and 10 points.
\”They came out in a triangle and two against Matt and Jarrin, but Trey and Chad were able to knock down some shots early to get them out of it and force them to go man to man. Cruise played a good game on the glass, he rebounded very well tonight,\” said Campman.
Clearfield will take on Freeport out of the WPIAL for the Tournament Championship Saturday night at 8:00 in Purchase Line.
\”We haven\’t gotten any better over the last two games. It\’s like Joe Paterno always says, If you are staying the same every game you are in trouble because you aren\’t getting any better,\” said Campman on his final thoughts.
