Coach Matt Wassil is going into the 2008 season with high expectations of his Golden Tide basketball team. Returning three starters and having depth on the roster, Wassil is excited to get the season started.
“We have Derek Dixon, our leading rebounder, David Kalgren, our leading scorer, and Ben McGary, our leading assist player, all returning,” says Wassil. “All three will provide critical contributions and experience.”
The key players don’t stop with their returning starters, according to Wassil. He is expecting Sam Gardener to also be a vital player off of the bench, as he was last year. Along with Gardner, he also is expecting a good season from seniors Andrew Starr, Tyler Johns and Mark Dell’ Antonio.
“These three guys (Starr, Johns, Dell’ Antonio) provide us with some depth that hasn’t been there in the past,” says Wassil.
The 2007 campaign for the Golden Tide was a big learning experience for the younger players. The team lost three senior starters, but Wassil says that the team is ready to step up and fill those roles. He also credits his coaching staff in being better prepared for what the kids are capable of doing.
“This should be an exciting season for us,” says Wassil.
The Golden Tide’s season kicks off Friday night as Curwensville travels to take on Moshannon Valley, with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. Curwensville’s first home game is the following Friday night, December 12, against Ridgway. The entire basketball schedule is available on www.d9sports.com.
