CLARION – St. Marys High School claimed its first championship while Clarion Area High School continued its recent domination with a victory in the 24th Annual Clarion University High School Mathematics Competition.
St. Marys won in the AA/AAA portion of the competition, becoming the fourth different winner in the last four years. It was also the first time St. Marys has taken home a trophy from the competition. Kiski, the 2006 winner was the runner-up, with Oil City third, 2007 winner Burrell fourth, and Titusville fifth.
Clarion won the A portion of the competition for the fourth time since 2004. Venango Catholic took second place, followed by defending A champion Elk County Catholic, Brockway and Karns City.
The top five, overall scores for the AA-AAA division were: Kelly Kuzemchak of Kiski, Nathan Euchler of Oil City, Zack Kurtik of Burrell, Raj Thaker of St. Marys, and Alex Kowalski of Valley.
In A, Ryan Shaffer of Brockway had the highest score, which was also the top score among all the competitors. He was followed by Bill Warren of Clarion, Tyler Healy of Elk County Catholic, Aaron Shaffer of Brockway, and Jake Smith of Venango.
The top five teams and top five individual scorers receive a trophy during an awards ceremony conducted by Dr. Ben Freed, professor of mathematics.
In the competition, teams of up to 10 participants take a 45-question mathematics test. The team scores are determined by adding the total of the top five scorers for each team. The top scorer on each team receives a mathematics magazine.
