Dear editor,
Any given day you can look on Gantdaily.com or look in The Progress and read a slew of ads looking for homes for animals, especially this time of year. Oftentimes, these animals were once good pets and valued by their owners, then a better “model” came along or people got bored with their pet and dropped it off at the overpopulated and underfunded local SPCA or Orphans of the Storm. Each of these organizations strives for giving animals a second chance at a good life with very little means.
What is unacceptable is the blatant lack of care or concern many people have for the lives of animals in our area. One can buy a “champion” dog or “show-worthy” animal for hundreds or thousands of dollars or people could look less for status in his or her pet and look for just that…a pet; a companion to welcome you at the door after a long day at work. I guarantee any animal that is given the affection and attention it deserves will be a good pet, free or otherwise.
It is our job to care for animals that cannot take care of themselves. Please think about the commitment you are taking on when you adopt an animal. Don’t get an animal because it’s a puppy or kitten and then discard it. As we all know, they grow up and cost money to care for appropriately. Get an animal because you are ready for the commitment and companionship and have the means to take care of it.
Lastly, contact local authorities if you see animal abuse or neglect. Ignorance doesn’t have to be tolerated.
