CLEARFIELD – A pitching gem by right-hander Isaac Butler at Brookville Saturday enabled the Clearfield fall baseball to salvage one of three weekend games.
Butler fashioned a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks in a 9-0 shutout for Clearfield\’s second win of the season.
He faced only one batter over the minimum in the nine-inning game because catcher Matt Lonjin threw out John Georgino on a steal attempt after he singled in the fourth inning.
Butler then set down the hosts in order until Dakota Singleton\’s hit in the ninth inning.
Lonjin had three singles and three runs batted into pace Clearfield\’s 15-hit attack.
Tyler Jacobson also had three hits, while Garret Samsel, Kyle Timchak and Tanner St. Clair chipped in with two apiece.
The tables were turned on manager Sid Lansberry\’s team on Sunday, though, as a pair of St. Marys hurlers matched one-hitters for a 13-0 and 10-0 sweep at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Field. Both games were shortened by the Mercy Rule.
Lonjin broke up J.J. Bilodeau\’s no-hit bid with a one-out single in the sixth inning of the opener, while Jacobson\’s second-inning single was the lone hit off John Meyer.
Clearfield (2-11) is booked for double-headers at West Branch Saturday at 1 p.m. and at home against DuBois Sunday at noon.
