CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield American Legion Post No. 6 fall ball team got off to a rocky start to the 2008 season, dropping all three games in the Clearfield Lions Club Wood Bat Tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Field.
Manager Sid Lansberry\’s team was beaten 5-3 by Brookville, 17-6 to DuBois and 13-10 to St. Marys.
DuBois and St. Marys played to a scoreless tie in the tourney opener, halted after eight innings because of the time limit, and finished 2-0-1, so the championship was decided by the second tie-breaker, fewest runs allowed.
The Clearfield Lions Club Trophy was awarded to DuBois, which gave up 12 runs, four less than St. Marys.
Both teams just got by Brookville, DuBois winning 7-6 on Saturday and St. Marys prevailing 8-6 on Sunday.
The tourney went down to the final game, St. Marys needing to win and hold Clearfield under six runs, but the hosts jumped out a 4-2 lead and then erupted for six runs in the top of the third inning.
However, St. Marys drew even in the next three innings and pulled out the victory with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Aaron Sayers collected four singles, Luke Peterson had a pair of hits and Tanner St. Clair and Tyler Jacobson doubled for Clearfield.
John Petrocchi and Jess Cogan led St. Marys with three hits apiece.
In its first game, Clearfield led 1-0 before Brookville broke through against Aaron Sayers with a four-spot in the fourth.
Kyle Timchak singled and doubled while Isaac Butler singled twice for Clearfield.
Kyle Mann had a pair of hits for Brookville.
DuBois built a 9-0 lead in its first three at-bats and scored in every inning with a 13-hit attack highlighted by Jordan LaBue\’s grand slam home run in the sixth.
Nick Sabados had three hits and Garrett Peterson added two for the winners. Both pounded doubles.
For Clearfield, St. Clair doubled twice and drove in two runs and Butler singled and doubled.
Clearfield returns to action Saturday with a nine-inning, 11 a.m. game at Philipsburg and will welcome Bellefonte to the LTRP Field Sunday for a 1 p.m. double-header.
