REEDSVILLE – Clearfield, the only Northern Tier entry in the District 5 Little League All-Star 10-and-11 Tournament, got off to a winning start by nudging Big Valley 7-5 in a rain-shortened game Sunday evening.
Play was stopped after two Clearfield batters had been retired in the top of the fifth inning, making the quarterfinal officially a four-inning game.
Both teams scored five runs in the first, with Clearfield getting run-scoring singles from C.J. Gathagan, Jon Janocko and Robby Carns and an RBI-double from Kyle Kushner.
Three of the first four Big Valley batters reach based on errors, leading to five unearned runs with three walks and a passed ball figuring in the scoring.
Janocko then shut out the home team the rest of the way, surrendering only two hits and striking out five.
Clearfield registered the deciding runs in the second inning. Herrington doubled and scored on a passed ball. Janocko walked and tallied the insurance run on a single by Sawyer Rowles.
Janocko had two hits.
Manager Carl Gathagan\’s team will host Marion Walker of Bellefonte Tuesday in a 6 p.m. semifinal game at William McNamee Memorial Field.
