HEPBURNIA – A sparkling one-hit pitching performance by Wes McGarry highlighted opening day for the Curwensville American Legion Post No. 505 baseball team Sunday as the Haymakers downed Reynoldsville 4-1 at Thorp Twins Memorial Field.
McGarry, a left-hander, struck out five and walked five in the Jefferson County League game.
He also had two hits, one a third-inning single that drove in the tying run.
Manager Adam McGary\’s Haymakers went ahead in the fourth.
With runners on base via a Reynoldsville error and a walk, Mark Dell\’Antonion doubled for the game-winning hit, and Ben McGary singled home an insurance tally.
Curwensville added another run in the fifth on a bases-loaded grounder by Dell\’Antonio.
Loser Jeremy Grove struck out five and gave up four hits and five walks in five innings. Nate Brennen pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
The Haymakers, who had a game at Punxsutawney rained out on May 18, will not play games booked at Brookville Tuesday and at home against DuBois Thursday because the Curwensville Area High School team is scheduled for District 9 Class A Playoff action.
The Brookville game tentatively is set for Sunday, according to Adam McGary.
Curwensville will play a non-league game at Philipsburg Wednesday and return to JCL action Saturday at Clearfield, with the first pitch at 5 p.m.
Justin McGary is Adam McGary\’s assistant coach.
