CLEARFIELD – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clearfield County is a youth mentoring agency that serves the need for positive role models for today’s youth. Big Brothers Big Sisters matches adult volunteers with children who need a little extra friendship, guidance and support.
Becoming a mentor only takes a couple of hours twice a month and should not cost a lot of money. Our service is completely free to our clients because we believe that no one should ever have to pay for a mentor.
BBBS relies on the support from the community for funding because we have no permanent source of funds. Throughout the year, they hold a variety of fundraisers such as yard sales, selling spikes tickets, wrapping Christmas gifts, in office fundraisers, individual contributions and we are also a member of the United Way. Their two signature fundraising events are “Shoot For The Magic“and “Bowl For Kid’s Sake.” “Shoot For The Magic” is a sporting clays shoot that takes place on July 25, 2008 at Hillendale Hunting Club sporting clays course in beautiful, historic Sinking Valley, near Tyrone. For the first time this year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clearfield County held three consecutive bowling events. They kicked off their Bowl For Kid’s Sake at the new Moshannon Valley Super Bowl in Philipsburg, followed by the DuBois Bowling Lanes and finally wrapping up at the Clearfield Bowling Lanes
In 1997 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clearfield County held its first DuBois Bowl For Kid’s Sake. There has been one person standing out from the hundreds of participants over the years and that is Helena Wallace. Helena has been a high money raiser for the last ten years; this year was no exception, raising over $1233.00.
Wallace said, “I am thankful to all of my contributors who donate year after year and support my efforts to help the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.”
At an age when most of us are enjoying our golden years, Wallace finds it in herself to lead our fundraising efforts. Even through hard economic times Wallace is still able to find donations. Wallaceenjoys the competition of trying to be the high money raiser and believes in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
She retired in 2002 from Verizon where she worked as a switching electronic technician.
The staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters is very proud of Helena’s repeated excellence in her fundraising activities. They truly appreciate her hard work raising the funds that they depend on to keep the program going.
On behalf of the staff and children of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program of Clearfield County, a plaque along with a $100.00 gift card was presented to Wallace in recognition of her outstanding charitable work supporting the BBBS program.
