STRONGSTOWN, PA – Shawn “Sheets” McGarvey of Coalport returned to victory lane Friday night at Dog Hollow Speedway in the Townsend Gas and Oil Late Models on Al’s Tire of Northern Cambria Trophy Night for the first time this season.
Tom Snyder of Mayport picked up his first win of the season in the Stoystown Auto Wreckers Fasttrak Late Models and it was young, second generation driver Joey Petyak of Gallitzin coming from 24th on the field to pick up the Texas Auto Ranch Four Cylinder Sidewinder feature.
Repeat winners included John Kinsey of Greensburg in the Jeff Dick Home Sales Street Stocks and Tim Good of Vintondale in the Brush Valley Tire Pure Stocks.
The late models hit the surface with Jim Ivory and Chris Rhodes on the front row but it was Ben Satterlee who took the lead and led the opening lap from his third starting spot. The race saw Satterlee set the early pace with Rhodes in second and Darrell Dick in third and Randy Smithley in fourth. Seventh place starter Shawn “Sheets” McGarvey was headed towards the front and was sitting second by the fourth lap.
As the race continued, McGarvey had to try and reel in Satterlee, which he was able to do, but catching and passing are two different things. McGarvey was on the inside of Satterlee and the duo ran side-by-side for several laps, but each lap, it was Satterlee who had the advantage. Then on lap 14 McGarvey was still working the inside of Satterlee and was able to edge out in the lead when the 15th lap was scored then the yellow flew for a double spin by Smithley and John Jackson. Jackson was credited with the caution and tailed the field while Smithley pitted. The final five laps Satterlee tried to regain the lead, but in doing so he had to hold off the challenges of 12th place started Rick Strong. At the waving of Bob Sullingers checkered flag it was McGarvey taking the win over Satterlee, Strong, Rhodes and Bobby Stokes who started 15th. Heat wins went to Darrell Dick, Yvette Hahn-Sell and Rick Strong.
Daniel Angelicchio and Kirby Tucker led the Fastrak late models the green with Angelicchio taking the lead and Tucker falling to second. Tommy Snyder was headed to the front from seventh and on lap five he pulled along side of Angelicchio and they ran side-by-side for two laps, with Snyder finally securing the lead on lap seven. The rest of the race was for second between Angelicchio, Tucker and Gary Stahl, but when the race ended it was Snyder getting his first win of the season. Angelicchio, Stahl, Tucker and Justin Kann rounded out the top five. Heat wins went Kirby Tucker and Justin Kann.
Denny Keener and Louie Orris led the street stock feature to the start with Keener taking the lead Tyler Hite and John Kinsey in second and third respectively. Keener was running a strong race when disaster stuck and he crashed out on lap five. This gave the lead over to Kinsey who has just taken over second from Hite. Kinsey then had to contend with Nick Goss, who took second from Hite with four laps to go, when it was all said and done the win went to Kinsey, it was his second of the season. Goss was second, but failed the post-race tech and was disqualified, giving second to Hite. Matt Hugill, Ray Charles and John McCann completed the top five. Heat wins went to John Kinsey and Mike Laughard.
In the pure stocks Dave Wells Jr. and Justin Queen led the pure stock field to the start with Queen leading three-quarters of the lap, before Tim Laughard took the lead off the fourth turn with Queen in second and John Mazey third. The top eight, including Laughard, Queen, Mazey, Wells, Chris Smithley, Rih Powell, Tim Good and Marshall Detwiler were close at the front and under a blanket. No one could make a mistake of the next guy is line was ready to pounce.
On lap seven Smithley spun out in turn two and was collected by Mike Silk, ending both drivers night. On the restart it was still Laughard, but here came Good, from his 12th place starting spot. Good move into second on lap eight and began to pressure Laughard, while Mazey remained a close third. Then with two laps to go, Good made his move, he was the inside of Laughard and he tried the outside and when the checkered flag waved it was Good getting his second straight win of the season. Laughard was second, Mazey was third, Detwiler was fourth and Queen was fifth. Tim Laughard and Tim Good won the preliminary events.
Mark Maglet and Jesse Laughard brought the 24 car four cylinder sidewinders to the start with Maglet taking the lead and Laughard in second. As the second lap was being completed, it was now Matt Weakland in second and Ray Hickok Jr. second. While the fight at the front was exciting in itself, not many people were expecting 24th place starter Joey Petyak to be moving towards the front, but he was headed to the front.
He was up to 14th in three laps, then in two more he advanced to eighth place all while Hickok was now out front. Hickok was setting the pace when mechanical gremlins hit him, forcing him to the pits on lap six. This gave the lead to Chris Yoder who now had Weakland in second and Petyak still headed to the front. Petyak was now sitting in the seventh spot. As the race continued so did the charge by Petyak, he was chasing down the leaders and moved into third on lap 11, then a caution waved, setting up a two lap shoot-out. Petyak tried the outside with two to go in the second turn, but Yoder went under him when he pushed too hard, then on the last lap, Petyak tried again, in turns three and four, diving under Yoder and this time he was able to hold the line and take the win, his career first at Dog Hollow. Yoder was a close second with Brennan McCracken, David Rocker and Jeremy Merten completing the top five. Heat wins went to David Rocker, Matt Weakland and Ray Hickok Jr.
Dog Tracks: An even 100 teams filled the pits, including 21 late models, 12 Fastrak late models, 17 street stocks, 20 pure stocks and 30 four cylinders…The mechanics race was won by Dylan Hite while the powder puff race was won by Colleen Mazey…Lee Fitzpatrick flipped his #81 four cylinder in the heat race and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. He’s going to be fine.
