ST. MARYS – Curwensville junior Holly Lansberry threw her fourth no-hitter of 2008 Thursday afternoon as the Lady Tide got win number 18 on the year beating Elk County Catholic (ECC) 3-0.
The Tide had beaten ECC earlier this year in another shutout, 6-0.
The victory was also the seventeenth in a row for Curwensville since losing to Clearfield, 5-1, back on April 9th. Curwensville ends it’s regular season at 18-1 and is the number one seed in the upcoming District 9 Class A Tournament.
It was the fifteenth shutout this year by the Curwensville pitching staff. The Lady Tide have outscored their opponents 196-3 since the Clearfield game.
Lansberry had three shortened game no-hitters so far this year, but Thursday’s game went the distance. The Tide pitching machine won her 16th of the year, striking out 11 batters along the way.
The Tide scored two in the first as Lansberry lead off with a single. Sara Clark drew a walk followed by an RBI single for Shannon McDonald. With Clark at third base Jenessa Stiles hit a deep sacrifice fly that scored Clark.
Curwensville’s last run came in the sixth inning Stiles singled and later scored on a Tess Bloom single to round out the scoring.
Ashley Demchak and Lansberry each had two hits to pace the Lady Tide offense.
Curwensville head coach Allen Leigey said afterwards, “That was another great performance by Holly (Lansberry). She was in command the entire game with great stuff.” Then Leigey added, “Now we get a chance to see how far we can go again this year. The district playoffs will be very tough. We just need to step up and keep playing the way we have.”
The Tide will play next in the District 9 A playoffs when they meet the winner of the DuBois Central Catholic-Clarion-Limestone first round game scheduled for Monday. Curwensville will host the winner on Wednesday of next week at 4:30 pm at Riverside Stadium.
