DUBOIS – Curwensville’s first game of the year was a 7-6 nail biter over DuBois Central Catholic (DCC).
Thursday afternoon wasn’t as close, but the Tide still dumped the Cardinals 5-1 on the road in DuBois.
The win gives the Tide an 11-1 record on the 2008 crusade. The Harmony game that was scheduled and cancelled this past Tuesday, now goes into the books as a forfeit for Curwensville. Harmony was unable to field a full squad for the contest. So now, Curwensville has officially won three straight.
Curwensville junior hurler, Ben McGary, was sparkling on the mound in picking up his fifth win of the season against one loss. McGary scattered just six hits, struck out 10 and didn’t issue a base on balls. The only damage done by DCC against McGary was a solo home run by DCC pitcher Dante DeSantes in the second inning, which gave the Cardinals there only lead of the game.
Head coach of Curwensville, Ryan Briskar spoke about his ace, “Ben (McGary) pitched great. He had great control and threw very few pitches.”
The Tide did tie the game at one each with a lone run in their top half of the third inning. It stayed that way until Curwensville broke it open with four tallies in the top of the final inning, the seventh.
Sam Gardner picked up a walk to get the seventh started for Curwensville. Pinch hitter Brett Sutika
reached base on an error on his well placed sacrifice bunt. McGary draws another walk in the inning loading the bases. Sophomore Wes McGarry drove a double into left center bringing home two teammates. The third walk of the inning went to Jed Greslick, once again loading the bases. Another sophomore, pinch hitter Jonathan Michaels, belted a double of his own, which plated two more Tide runners. After the fire was put out, Curwensville led 5-1 with three outs away from victory.
About Michaels and McGarry, Briskar commented, “Jonathan (Michaels) and Wes (McGarry) both stepped up big today with people in scoring position.”
The Tide also played flawless in the field, “ We played very solid defense today. A key to our winning this game,” added Briskar.
Curwensville travels to St. Mary’s to battle the Flying Dutch on Monday at 4:15 pm. In the first meeting, April 8th, Curwensville prevailed 2-0 behind McGary’s three hit shutout.
