CLEARFIELD – PennDOT has completed sufficient repairs on the Route 53 Irvona Bridge to re-open it to one lane, with no weight restriction. This will allow PennDOT to lift the 25-mile detour. PennDOT closed the bridge last week after an annual, in-depth inspection.
Two full bridge crews from PennDOT Clearfield County Maintenance have been working to repair the truss members (steel beams) both above and below the bridge deck.
The one-lane traffic pattern is being enforced with a temporary traffic signal. The traffic signal will require vehicles to take turns crossing the bridge. PennDOT will continue its bridge repair work under the one-lane traffic condition.
The bridge, built in 1940, is 274 feet long and carries 4,412 vehicles a day. It is located on Route 53 in the village of Irvona in southern Clearfield County.
