CLEARFIELD – As part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s ongoing efforts to promote economic revitalization while safeguarding the environment and public health, EPA Administrator Christie Whitman announced $73.1 million in Brownfields funding for a variety of grants made available from the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act.
EPA announced that 176 applicants were selected to receive awards from the highly competitive, nationally recognized, grant pool. Applications came from communities located in 37 states and seven tribes. The assessment grants are used to inventory, characterize and conduct planning relating to one or more Brownfield sites or as part of a community- wide effort. Among the grant recipients EPA has selected the Clearfield County Economic Development Corporation for two brownfields assessment grants. A $200,000 hazardous substances grant will be used to perform a site inventory, conduct Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, and support community involvement activities. A $200,000 petroleum grant will be used to perform the same tasks at sites with potential petroleum contamination. Both funds will be expended throughout Clearfield County in order to create future developable sites.
“The Clearfield County Economic Development Corporation submitted outstanding grant proposals, and we deeply appreciate the tremendous commitment of time and energy that went into their preparation,” stated EPA Assistant Administrator, Susan Parker Bodine.
The CCEDC wishes to thank all of those who participated in the grant preparation process, by submitting Brownfield sites and writing letters of support. This truly is a community wide effort and it is because of these types of efforts that Clearfield County will positively progress into the future.
Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties takes development pressures off of undeveloped, open land, and both improves and protects the environment.
