CURWENSVILLE – It may be spring, with unsettled weather and all, but that’s not the case with the Curwensville Lady Tide softball team. No matter their location, it has been sunny and hot for the defending PIAA Class A state champions.
For the sixth straight game the Lady Tide have come out on top. This time St. Mary’s was the victim, as Curwensville beat their visitors, 4-1, Tuesday afternoon. With the victory the Lady Tide now have a 7-1 overall record.
Junior pitcher Holly Lansberry was the story of this game as she tossed a two hit, 17 strikeout, complete game performance against the Lady Dutch. Lansberry also paced the Tide offense with a three hit, two RBI game.
Lansberry got the Tide on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a lead off double. A wild pitch moved her to third where Sara Clark then drove her home with a SAC fly to left field.
Curwensville added two more big runs in the bottom of the second to put St. Mary’s in a hole they would never climb out of.
Jenessa Stiles drew a walk for the Tide to start the inning. After singles by Stacey Johnson and Tess Bloom the Tide were in business with the bases loaded and no one out. Then with one out and the bases still loaded Lauren McKeown hit a grounder to shortstop Whitney Schlimm of the Dutch who quickly threw out Stiles at the plate on a fielders choice. The frustration finally ended for Curwensville when Lansberry stroked a single, driving home Johnson and Bloom to give the Tide a 3-0 bulge after two innings.
The Lady Tide would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth while St. Mary’s tallied it’s lone run, an unearned one, in the top of the sixth.
Coach Allen Leigey of Curwensville was glad Lansberry was on his side, “Holly really picked it up again today, this time not only on her pitching, but her hitting as well.” He also praised his entire squad this way, “This team is playing so well. Everyone seems to add a very important contribution, either at the plate or in the field.”
The Lady Tide are on the road Wednesday as they visit Brockway to take on the Lady Rovers. Last year Brockway won the first game, a controversial one at that, 5-4 and the Tide took the second contest 1-0.
St. Mary’s dropped below .500 on the year at 4-5.
