BROCKWAY – The Curwensville Golden Tide baseball squad made the journey to Brockway on Thursday and came up one run short in a 6-5 loss to the Rovers. The one run setback now has the Tide’s 2008 record at 6-2.
The Tide did jump out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, which they kept until the bottom of the second when Brockway tallied three times. The back and forth game continued as Curwensville picked up three of it’s own in their half of the third to lead 4-3 after three complete innings.
Brockway tied the game at 4 apiece with one run in the bottom of the fourth only to have the Tide jump back out in front with a run in the top of the fifth. The Rovers wouldn’t cave in though, as they pushed across what would turn out to be the winning runs, two, in their half of the sixth inning.
Curwensville sophomore, Jed Greslick, picked up two doubles on the afternoon while Jesse Hoover banged a double and had three RBI’s. Ben McGary had two singles and scored three times for the Tide.
Head coach Ryan Briskar did single out a few of his troops in spite of the loss, “Jesse (Hoover) and Jed (Greslick) played very well for us today. They both put the ball in play and made good things happen.”
Tide senior pitcher, Justin Johnston, started his first game of the year and took the loss to even his record at 1-1.
Johnston, who struck out 10 along the way, was also praised, along with catcher Cory Bloom by Briskar, “J.J. (Justin Johnston) did a good job keeping the Brockway hitters off balance. He just had too high of a pitch count to keep in there.” As for Bloom, Briskar noted, “Cory (Bloom), as always, played a great game defensively for us.”
Curwensville gets a one day rest, then heads out on the road again Saturday for an 11 am encounter with Moshannon Valley in a Moshannon Valley League game. Last season the Tide swept the Black Knights 10-1 and 16-3.
