DUBOIS-State ranked Dubois Central Catholic (DCC) took care of business Wednesday night on their home court in beating the Curwensville Golden Tide basketball team 78-43. The Cardinals entered the game ranked number seven in the latest PIAA Class A statewide poll. The victory leaves DCC with a season record of 20-2. The loss snaps a two game winning streak for Curwensville, dropping their overall mark to 8-12.
Junior Derek Dixon of Curwensville kept the Golden Tide in the game in the first quarter by muscling his way for six of the Tide’s 12 points. Still, after the first eight minutes, the Cardinals had a seven point edge 19-12. DCC outscored Curwensville by another seven points in the second frame to take a commanding 37-23 lead into the locker room.
Hitting three treys in the third period pushed DuBois Central Catholic into scoring 21 points while holding the Tide to 11. After 24 minutes the Cardinals, up 58-34, were on their way to win number 20 and keeping a strong grip on their lofty state ranking.
The final period saw Curwensville sophomore Jed Greslick score all of his team’s points with nine. However, DCC actually had it’s best quarter when they smacked the Tide 20-9 in the final stanza to win easily. The 35 point margin of victory matched the January 2 game when DCC also won by 35 over the Tide, at Curwensville, 85-50.
Dom Varacallo led all scorers with 20. The senior guard had 4 three’s on the evening. Max Moclock chipped in with 13 while John Ferraraccio added 12 for coach Mike Nesbit and his Cardinals. On the night, twelve Cardinals scored. Curwensville, under third year coach Matt Wassil, was paced by Dixon and his 11 points. Greslick’s nine fourth quarter points were second best for the Tide.
The Cardinals made a clean sweep by winning the junior varsity contest 54-35.
