HARRISBURG – State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Clearfield County said two abandoned mines in Clearfield County will be reclaimed at no cost to taxpayers.
Finney Enterprises of Osceola Mills has been awarded a government-financed construction contract to reclaim more than 3 acres of mine subsidence about 1 mile south of Brisbin in Woodward Township.
In return for reclaiming and regrading the site to original contours and applying lime to the pit floor – work valued at $18,000 — Finney Enterprises will be allowed to remove about 5,600 tons of coal.
Hilltop Coal Co. of Houtzdale will perform similar reclamation work to a 4.9-acre site about a mile west of Madera in Bigler Township. The cost of the reclamation is projected at $29,400, and Hilltop will recover about 2,500 tons of coal.
George said the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Moshannon District Office awarded the contracts. No blasting or coal reprocessing is permitted at either site.
