CURWENSVILLE – Their combined records weren’t much to write home about, but Curwensville’s Lady Tide and the Lady Rovers of Brockway put on an exciting show Friday night at Curwensville High School in Patton Hall. When the smoke cleared Brockway came away with a 39-38 squeaker to send their overall record to 3-8. The loss for the Lady Tide kept them winless at 0-6.
Curwensville lived off of the free throw line in the first quarter, taking a 13-10 lead after one. In the opening period the Tide made 7 of 10 charity shots as Brockway displayed a very aggressive defense right from the start. However, it was the second quarter that did the Lady Tide in as the Rovers outscored their opponents 17-12 to go up by two at the half, 27-25.
The Lady Tide ended up taking 16 first half free throws and hitting on 11. Junior Hannah Walls had one waved off for Curwensville in the second period as she stepped on the line. On the night Curwensville was 16 for 26 and Brockway only 4 for 15 in the free throw department.
Brockway tightened the screws in their defense in the third quarter holding Curwensville to only 4 while scoring 7 themselves. The edge gave the visitors a 34-29 margin heading into the final frame.
Head coach Vic Gearhart got his Lady Tide squad to push a little harder in the final eight minutes to get back in the contest. Once again the Tide lived at the free throw line as they made 5 of 10. One short of a tie. Two short of a win. The Lady Tide came into the game shooting 69 percent from the line.
Curwensville’s Holly Fink, a senior, led all scorers with 14 on the evening in the Allegheny Mountain League (AML) contest. Walls had 8, with Alesia Bressler putting in 7, followed by 6 from Tess Bloom. Brockway was paced by Sasha Fields with 11. Juliane Genevro and Cinnamon Monteville each dropped in 8 to help the Lady Rovers pick up the road win.
