CLEARFIELD – Wal-Mart’s decision to appeal their assessed value at their Supercenter was a topic of discussion at the Lawrence Township Supervisor’s meeting Tuesday.
According to an earlier GantDaily article, Wal-Mart is $6.8 million value placed upon their property located on state Route 879. Believing their property should be valued at $4.6 million Wal-Mart is seeking a lowered valuation.
Township Solicitor Jim Naddeo said he sat in on a status conference involving the three taxing authorities and Wal-Mart. Those taxing entities include Lawrence Township, Clearfield School District and Clearfield County.
“We’re slated to lose $10,000,” said Bill Lawhead, supervisor chairman of the tax dollars the township would lose if the appeal was granted. The Clearfield School District would lose around $40,000.
Naddeo noted that one of the topics discussed was having the three taxing entities contribute a proportionate amount to the money they receive from Wal-Mart to pay for an appraisal of the property.
Naddeo commented that the school district would pay the lion’s share of the cost if that route were taken. He also recommended that the board table any action on the issue Tuesday. Naddeo said he will recommend board action when he has a better idea how much the appraisal will cost and whether it will be done proportionately.
“That appraisal is not going to be cheap,” said Naddeo.
The taxing entities have 90 days to complete an appraisal.
