BROCKWAY – The Brockway Police Department responded to a one-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 219 (Cherry Street) at 2:47 a.m. Thursday morning.
A sport-utility vehicle was traveling north on Cherry Street at a high rate of speed. The vehicle went off the right berm, then hit a guide rail near the entrance to the Owens-Brockway Plant No. 18 parking lot, continued traveling into the “All Wash Up” car wash lot and striking into a large metal overhead sign post.
The vehicle was severely damaged, and police report that the vehicle’s engine caught on fire. The fire was extinguished quickly by the Brockway Volunteer Hose Co.
The driver of the vehicle was Jerome W. Black Jr., 48, of Brockway. He was pronounce dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner Bernard Snyder at 3:35 a.m. He was the only occupant of the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt.
The Brockway Police Department were assisted at the scene by the Brockway Volunteer Hose Co., Brockway Area Ambulance Service, the Jefferson County Coroner, and the Pennsylvania state police.
The investigation is continuing.
