Friday night was the 86th meeting of these two squads, with the Chucks leading the series 42-40 and 3 ties. The Bisons came into this game with a 1-2 record and the Chucks are 0-3.
This was the first road trip for the Bisons this season, and they looking for a win after their week 3 loss to the Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers last week. The Chucks were looking for their first win of the season after a loss last week to the Bradford Owls.
It looked like the Chucks were going to come out and take the game right from the get go, with the Bisons mishandling the kickoff and the Chucks recovering a fumble at the Bisons 30 yard line.
The Chucks first series didn\’t go anywhere. The Bisons defense stood their ground and didn\’t let the Chucks gain a yard. The Chucks went 3 plays and out. On 4th down of the series Zach Smith of the Chucks passed the ball and Jarrin Campman intercepted the ball on the 3 yard line of the Bisons but, with a penalty it took the Chucks near the 50 yard line where they had to punt and Tyler Davis fair caught the ball.
The Bisons first possession started in their end of the field. A couple of runs early by J.Campman and Isiah Morgan gave them a 3rd and 4 yards when J.Campman passed to Drew Hipps for a 22-yard first down reception. After a I. Morgan 3 yard run, J. Campman handed off to Hipps for 15-yard gain which put them at the Chucks 28 yard line. After a 3 yard run by J. Campman, Toby Young had a 19-yard run that took them to the 6 yard line. J. Campman capped off the drive with a 6-yard TD run and Parker Harrington kicked the extra point which made the score 7-0 with 6:05 left in the first quarter.
The 2nd possession for the Chucks started on the Chucks 25 yard line, and it was more of the same. Another 3 and out that was topped off by a 15 yard sack by Hipps. The Chucks had to punt once again which gave the Bisons good field position.
The Bisons 2nd possession started on the Chucks 35-yard line. J. Campman threw a swing pass to Trey Campman for a 24-yard gain. Then J. Campman handed off to I. Morgan for an 11 yard scamper for the Bisons second score and Harrington kicked for a 14-0 lead with 3:30 left in the first quarter.
After a kickoff, the Chucks started their next possession on their own 25 yard line. Smith handed off to Nick Wehrle that went for no gain, and a couple of incomplete passes to Kyle Steffey and Bobby Wingert and a false start penalty made the Chucks punt the ball to the Bisons.
The Bisons started their next possession on the Chucks 41 yard line in good field position. After I. Morgan ran for no gain, when he was stopped by Easton Weaver and Wingert, J. Campman threw a pass to Todd Hyrn which was just out of his reach. The next play J. Campman was almost sacked by Eric Knox, but instead he hooked up with Hyrn for a 40 yard gain. J. Campman then kept the ball for a 1-yard TD run, and with the Harrington kick the score was 21-0 with 1:22 left in the first quarter.
The last possession of the quarter for the Chucks started on their own 33 yard line. Smith handed of to Mike Decker and a host of Bisons stopped him for no gain. Smith rolled out and threw a pass which hit Rich Queen on the numbers and was incomplete. Smith rolled out again on the next play and passed the ball which was picked off by T. Campman. End of the 1st quarter 21-0
The 2nd quarter started with the Bisons on their own 45 yard line. Morgan ran for a 5-yard gain and then J. Campman hit Derek Morgan for 13 yard pass. Another run by I. Morgan ended up with 13 yards. J. Campman then threw a pass to Nate Greenland for 15 yard gain. They went to the Chucks 14 yard line and on a run that went nowhere and a pass that went 4yards and an incomplete pass. Harrington tried a field goal from the 10 yard line which was no good.
The Chucks first possession of the 2nd quarter saw Smith overthrow an open Furman and then Smith tried to hand off to one of his backs, but they ran into each other and fumbled the ball, which the Bisons recovered.
The 2nd series of the quarter for the Bisons started on the 16 yard line of the Chucks. J. Campman ran the ball for 8 yards and then 5 yards. A 3 yard run by I. Morgan and a TD, the Harrington kick made it 28-0 with 7:34 left before the half.
The next series for the Chucks started on their own 27 yard line. Smith overthrew Wehrle who was wide open. Then with a procedure penalty that knocked them back 5yards, Smith threw a pass to Furman which was picked off by Derek Morgan.
The Bisons started on the Chucks 17 yard line. J. Campman threw two passes, one to Hipps and one to T. Campman which were broken up by Weaver and Kevin Zambory. Then J. Campman hit Hipps in the end zone with a 17 yard strike for their 5th score and the Harrington kick was good again. The score was 35-0 with 6:48 left in the 2nd quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff the Bisons were offsides and had to redo the kick. The Chucks started on their own 32 yard line. Smith had a 2 yard gain and then was sacked by the Bison defense for a 4-yard loss. Smith\’s next pass fell incomplete and the Chucks had to punt once again.
The Bisons started on their own 49 yard line. J. Campman handed off to I. Morgan the next 5 times for 34 yards. On 3rd and 3, J. Campman pitched to Young for a 15 yard gain. The scoring drive was capped off with I. Morgan 2 yard run. The Harrington kick was good. The score read 42-0 with 1:39 until half time.
The Chucks had one more series before the half. Smith handed the ball to Furman three times for 11 yards and Smith threw to Weaver, but it was broken up by Joel Fox and that ended the half with Clearfield up 42-0.
The 3rd quarter began with the Bisons kicking to the Chucks. A 15 yard penalty put the Chucks on the Bisons 48 yard line. Smith handed off to Furman for a 4 yard and a 24 yard gain. This was the best field position for the Chucks all night. Smith handed the ball to Furman for a 20 yard scamper for a score. Furman also kicked the extra point and the score was 42-7 with 9:44 left in the 3rd.
With the mercy rule in affect, that meant the clock was not going to stop. J. Campman and I. Morgan were in for one more series. J. Campman handed off to I. Morgan three times for a 1 yard loss by Wingert, and 5 yard and 4 yard runs. On 4th down the Bisons went to punt and were flagged for too many men on the field. Then a procedure penalty and the Bisons were punting from their own 5 yard line.
After the punt the Chucks started on their own 48 yard line. After Furman and Smith ran for 2 and 4 yard gains, Smith recovered his own fumble. The Chucks went for it on 4th and 4, and Smith threw an interception to Davis.
With the Bisons smelling victory, coach Janocko put in the 2nd string. At QB was Junior Brandon Sass. Sass handed the ball to Scott Nishida for 1 yard gain then Sass on a keeper had the ball stripped by Wingert and Young for the Bisons recovered. Sass pitched the ball to Young for a 6 yard run. Hipps was forced to punt.
The Chucks still played on. Smith handed to Furman for a 3 yard gain before the 3rd quarter ended and the 4th began 42-7.
The start of the 4th quarter had Smith fumble the snap and the Bisons recovered the ball. That made 5 turnovers for the Chucks in this contest.
On the Bisons next series they were content on running out the clock. Sass handed to Nishida for a 6 yard run and then to Derek Danver for a 3 yard run and then a TD that was called back due to a penalty. Sass handed off to Nishida and Danver again for no gains. Sass had a keeper for 3 yards and then the Chucks took over one last time.
Looking to score before the final whistle sounded, the Chuck\’s Smith handed to Furman for a 10 yard run. Smith had a pass knocked down by Tyler Danver. Smith then handed the ball to Furman for a 51 yard run and a 5 yard run. The Chucks ended up on the Bisons 24 yard line and had two running plays to Furman that didn\’t go anywhere, and a couple of passes that were incomplete.
The Bisons took over on downs and they took a knee to run out the clock.
The Bisons moved to 2-2 while the Chucks fell to 0-4 on the season.
Next week the Bisons head to Bellefonte for a 7:00 PM game.
