CLEARFIELD – Thursday was all about chili and a good cause.
I started at lunch with two chili dogs. If I were a breakfast eater I would have had chili powder on my eggs.
I was getting my palate ready for one of the spiciest fundraisers in the region.
Thursday was the tenth annual Clearfield Hospice Chili Bowl, Las Vegas style. This years theme was Viva Las Vegas. It was all about the King, the one armed bandit and a good cause.
So with that in mind I took a gamble and rolled the dice with seven chilies. I went with seven because if I ate more I’d have to try 11. My stomach wasn’t up for that Thursday night.
The first chili I tried was from the Curwensville Angler’s Restocking Program. It had a good tomato and brown sugar taste and had lots of meat. Definitely a good way to start the night off.
The second chili I had was Jailhouse Rock Chili from the hospital’s computer staff. It was a little spicy and had good body to it.
The third chili I had was Curves 30 Minute Chili Sensation. It was lite on beans and had a good tomato taste.
Chili number four was Chidboy’s Cha Ching Chili. Initially it had a sweet kind of taste, but warmed up later. A well-balanced chili.
Chili number five was Knickerbocker Villa’s Golden Oldie’s Chili. This chili had a good spice flavor and was not very sweet. Possibly my favorite.
Number six was Luck of the Draw Chili by PennDOT Region Two Engineers. It had good spice and corn and overall had a good texture.
Lucky number seven was Matt’s Camp Chili. It had some good zing too it, but not a spicy zing. Good stuff.
Scott Crago, spirit judge, commented on the competition.
“The competition is thick,” said Crago.
The evening also saw a butterfly release to honor and remember those who have passed on.
According to Dana Wilson, coordinator of the event, all proceeds from the evening went to Clearfield Hospice.
Wilson thanked all involved in the event for their participation and help.
Hospice provides care to terminally ill patients, offering pain and symptom management. Psychological, emotional and spiritual support is given to patients and their families. Services are provided to all patients regardless of their ability to pay. Monies raised from the event will be used toward providing extra care to patients in their homes and purchasing needed items for the patients that are not covered by health insurance.
