Summer is winding down. Soon, kids will be going back to school, football seasons will be in full swing and leaves will turn colors.
Eventually. But for now, it’s just hot andsweaty days.
Regardless of heat and humidity, news still happens. This last week saw a big announcement from a biofuels firm looking to move into Clearfield, the arrest of a suspected drug dealer, a meeting about the future of Clearfield Borough parks and information on some recent scam activity.
The county re-mobilized its drought task force, burglars were caught in the act and the final results into an accident that involved a tractor trailer and three homes was released.

Police Conclude Investigation for Tractor-Trailer that Hit Three Houses
CLEARFIELD – Driver error and vehicle brake failure caused a tractor-trailer to crash in Lawrence Township July 18.
That information comes from Lawrence Township Police, which released the results of their investigation Monday morning.

County Commissioners Discuss County Bridges, Inspections
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners discussed county bridges and safety issues involving them on Tuesday.
According to Mike Lytle, county commissioner, the county started receiving calls about the safety of county bridges in the wake of the Minnesota bridge disaster. Lytle and that the county is in control of nine bridges throughout the county. Seven of them are operational and two, one in Knox Township and one in Lawrence Township are closed.

BioEnergy Takes Option on Tech Park, Presents Plan to Public
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough will be the likely site of BioEnergy International LLC’s 108-million-gallon-per-year ethanol production facility.
The company is currently working on finalizing the site layout, and Sam McConnell, vice president of business development for BioEnergy, said he is hopeful that construction can start in September or October.

BioEnergy Discusses Local Environmental Impacts of Proposed Plant
CLEARFIELD – For the past year, the wheels have been turning to bring an ethanol plant to Clearfield County in the form of a $250 million plant including a pilot project from BioEnergy International LLC based in Norwell, Mass.
Wednesday night, residents packed the Third Ward Fire Hall to hear about the project.

Examining the Job Front on the BioEnergy Project
CLEARFIELD – BioEnergy International LLC is planning to begin construction on a $250 million ethanol plant in Clearfield Borough as soon as September or October.
It will take an estimated 18 to 24 months to complete construction, and in that time, about 250 prevailing wage construction personnel will be employed.
When the plant is completed, expected to be in the spring of 2009, about 55 semi-skilled or skilled workers will be employed at the ethanol plant.

Elected Officials and Private Citizens Attend Parks, Riverwalk Meeting in Clearfield Borough
CLEARFIELD – A public meeting for the development of local parks and a proposed river walk was held Monday night at the Clearfield Borough building.
Clearfield Borough was granted funds from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to do a study on updating and enhancing Upper Witmer, Kurtz and Rebecca Parks.

Man Wanted on Drug Charges Arrested
DUBOIS – A DuBois City man wanted for the alleged sale of heroin and Fentonyl was taken into custody on July 29, according to PA Crime Stoppers.State
State police had been searching for Darryl Lynn Higgins since May. According to PA Crime Stoppers Higgins, 23, sold heroin and Fentanyl in the City of DuBois between April 17 and April 30. The drugs were packaged with the logo “Top Secret” and “New Era.”

Burglary Thwarted in Clearfield Borough
CLEARFIELD – A resident thwarted an attempted burglary in Clearfield Borough between Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the Clearfield Borough Police Department, two people attempted to gain entry into a residence on Daisy Street by attempting to remove and air conditioning unit from a window. A resident heard the disturbance and chased the two away.

Clearfield County Reactivates Drought Task Force
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners reactivated the Drought Task Force for the first time in what is believed to be eight years on Tuesday.
According to Mark McCracken, county commissioner, Jerry Pollock, deputy director of the Clearfield County Emergency Management Agency sent the commissioners a letter asking for the task force to be reactivated.

DUBOIS – The DuBois Area School District’s search for a new superintendent continues.
Sharon Kirk, current superintendent for the DASD announced earlier in the year that she will retire in January 2008.

Lawrence Township Police Warn of Scam
CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Police Department reported a scam involving fake Wal-Mart moneygrams.
According to police an area resident received three Wal-Mart moneygrams in the mail from an internet address for payment of an item he was trying to sell. The resident did not ship the item but did have Wal-Mart check out the moneygrams. He was told they were fake.

Punxsy State Police Report Internet Scams
PUNXSUTAWNEY – State police in Punxsutawney reported an internet scam that reached reached Philadelphia and overseas.
According to the report a credit card number was stolen from a Punxsutawney resident and then used on the internet to purchase jewelry. The jewelry was then sent to a residence in Philadelphia.
A follow-up with state police in Philadelphia revealed the person in Philadelphia who received the jewelry posted her resume on Monster.com. She was contacted by an unknown person representing a company and was hired over the internet. She then began receiving packages by mail. She would be directed to repackage the items and send them overseas with prepaid shipping labels.
