CURWENSVILLE – Sunday night kicked off the week’s festivities for the 2007 edition of Curwensville Days.
Immediately after the traditional vesper services, crowds gathered to honor two groups of worthy residents.
First, Bill Williams presented the “Service Above Self” award to the members of Community Care Group of Ridgeview Elder Care.
This award has been given 34 times in the last 37 years.
Sponsored the last 32 years by the Rotary Club, the recipients are chosen because they have given of their time and talents and worked for the common good of everyone in Curwensville and the surrounding communities.
Williams said, “They did it because it was the ‘right thing to do.’ And, also because they want to see their community thrive and grow and realize that Curwensville is a great place to live and raise a family.”
The Community Care Group of Ridgeview Elder Care is in its 20th year of operation. The organization’s service to Ridgeview includes among other things: monthly birthday parties for Ridgeview residents, bingo, cards and flowers to residents on holidays such as Mother’s Day and Father’s
Day and visits by the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus.
Williams then introduced Allen Leigey, head coach of the Curwensville Golden Tide softball team. Leigey lead his team to win the PIAA Class A Championship.
The team and the coaching staff were also honored at Sunday’s services.
Leigey introduced each team member to the crowd telling stories of the girls during their championship season. After honoring the team and the staff, Leigey went on to thank the fans for their support.
“Whereever we went we always had a great following.” Leigey continued, “We really appreciate that!.”
Those in attendance went on to celebrate the team’s victory by sharing cake with the players and coaches.
Curwensville Days continues all this week. The festivities will come to an end Saturday night. Saturday’s activities include the annual firemen’s parade, where the softball team will be honored again as grand marshals.
