Reynoldsville —Adam Nixon of Grampian added his name to a long list of winners this season at Hummingbird Speedway as he won the four-cylinder main event. Other winners on Bill Churney Construction night included Eric Moore of Frenchville, Fuzzy Fields of Brockport, Pete Mackie of St. Marys, and Dave Kohler of DuBois.
The 15-lap IC Light Beer four-cylinder feature rolled onto the speedway with George Bailey and Nixon showing the way to the green flag. Nixon took the initial lead with Bailey falling off the pace after the first lap. Nixon stretched out his lead as Mike Anderson and Orin Taylor battled side by side for second. Nixon led through the midway mark with Anderson, Taylor, Bob Ralston, Jr., and Don Henry rounding out the top five. Anderson closed the gap on Nixon with Ralston, Taylor, and Henry battling close for third. The races only caution flew on lap 11 when Ralston’s car went around in turn two. Nixon had his hands full with Anderson in the final four laps, but was able to hold him off at the line for the win. During the post race cool down lap Bill McMillen was rear ended by Cooter Wolfe. Wolfe was disqualified for his actions, while McMillen was life flighted to Altoona Hospital with neck pain. Taylor and Anderson won the heats.
Dom Surra and Jason Peters started on the front row of the 20-lap Prontock Beer Distributors street stock main. As the field raced down the front stretch, Dan Smeal’s car got sideways with Jim Bloom hitting him almost head on. Both drivers were uninjured, but both cars received heavy front-end damage. On the restart, Fields dove to the inside of Surra for the lead. Fields stretched out his lead as Surra and Gary Little battled for second. Fields maintained his lead at the halfway mark with Surra, Little, Bob Rosman, and Bill Huntington trying to track him down. After a lap 11 caution, Surra tried to get under Fields for the lead, but Fields closed the door. Little worked his way by Surra on lap 16, but ran out of laps as Fields went on to take his third win of the year. Fields, Peters, and Surra won the heats.
The 25-lap Brookville Wood Products limited late model feature was next on the racing surface with Donnie Connor and Moore on the starting front row. Moore grabbed the lead with a number of cars battling for second. After three minor caution periods, Moore and Dave Shagla, Jr. tried to get away from the field. Moore continued to lead at the midway point with Chris Farrell, Shagla, Billy Dickson, and Luke Hoffner trying to close the gap. Lap 14 saw a multi-car spin in turn two with all drivers able to continue. Hoffner was on a mission as he worked his way by Dickson, and then passed Farrell for second on lap 21. Hoffner closed to within two car lengths of Moore, but Moore wouldn’t be denied as he picked up his second win of the year. Moore, Hoffner, and Connor won the heats.
Steve Barnes and Kyle Lindenmuth led the field of Miller Brothers Furniture/By The Room Furniture pure stocks trackside for their 15-lap feature. Lindenmuth grabbed the early lead with number of cars battling two and three wide for position. The races only caution flew on lap 6 when Francis Gustafson’s car went up in smoke. Mackie made his move at the midway mark as he got by Lindenmuth for the lead. Mackie pulled away from the field late as he went on to take his second win of the season. Jason Bainey and Brian Rhed copped the heats.
Scott Buffington and Calvin Robinson led a full field of front wheel drive four-cylinders trackside for their 12-lap feature. Robinson took the early lead with Steve Ghezzi and Kohler keeping close tabs on the leader. Robinson still showed the way at he halfway point with Kohler, Todd English, Ghezzi, and Dustin Fields completing the top five. Kohler worked the outside line as he made the pass for the lead on lap 8. The race ended with a green-white-checkered finish with Kohler holding off English for his second win of the year. Fields, English, Jerry Walls, and Kirby Tucker won the heats.
SPEEDWAY NOTES: There were 95 cars in the pits this evening including 19 limited lates, 22 street stocks, 16 four-cylinders, 13 pure stocks, and 25 front wheel drive four-cylinders. Racing continues Saturday evening with a five-division program and a special appearance by Speedy The Clown. Gates open at 4:30pm with racing at 7.
