The Gant Daily athlete of the week for May 14 through May 20 is split between 2 Clearfield track athletes: Lauren Bell and Gwenn Porter.
Each claimed District 9 AAA titles on Wednesday at Brookville. Senior Bell won the triple jump with a jump of 33\’ 5\”. She also claimed second place in the high jump with a leap of 5\’0\”.
Freshman Porter won the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:28.77. She added a third in the 3,200 meter run and a 4th in the 800 meter run.
Both athletes qualified for the PIAA state championships on May 25.
With the \”second\” season beginning for some area teams, the time to really shine begins:
West Branch baseball player Keatin Gaines came up big in the opening round upset of #5 seed Central. Gaines earned the win in relief by pitching 5 innings and allowing zero earned runs while picking up 8 strikeouts. Gaines helped himself at the plate by going 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Last week\’s athlete of the week, Amy Tomasko of Mo Valley also came up big in a first round playoff upset. Tomasko also won in relief by allowing zero earned runs over the last 3 innings in a come from behind 11-4 win over rival West Branch. Tomasko also blasted a double that scored 3 runs to help her cause.
In other news – Holly Lansberry threw 3 shutouts. The \”big one\” being a 1-0, 13 strikeout, revenge victory against Brockway.
