DUBOIS – Just when it appeared the Clearfield Lady Bisons were building momentum for the District 9 Class AAA Softball Playoffs, they fell victim to another late inning rally Tuesday and suffered their eighth loss by one run.
DuBois scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 5-4 victory at DuBois City Park, ending Clearfield\’s three-game winning streak.
On May 4, the Lady Beavers came up with two runs in the top of the seventh to nip the Lady Bisons 3-2 at the Bison Sports Complex.
Unlike that game, a pitcher\’s duel between Clearfield\’s Mandy Rowles and DuBois\’ Leah Wallock, hitters had the upper hand in the rematch as the two teams combined for 22 hits.
Nikki Collins drilled three of Clearfield\’s nine singles, and Brittany Pataky had two.
Wallock pounded two doubles and a single, Kirsten Wilcox rapped three singles and Lorianne Barbey and Jendi Schwab added two hits apiece for DuBois.
The District 9 rivals matched single runs in the second inning.
Brittany Pataky walked and stole second, Julie Colesar singled to left center, and they then executed a double steal to put the Lady Bisons ahead. But Brit Sayers walked, stole second and scored on a two-out error to tie the game.
Coach Bob Dixon\’s Lady Bisons snapped the deadlock in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Collins and a two-run single by Pataky.
DuBois (14-5) had a runner thrown out at the plate, third baseman Courtney Morgan to catcher Kenzie McGovern, in the bottom of the inning but still managed a run when Rowles walked one batter and hit Meg Brown with the bases loaded.
Barbey, who had four hits in the first meeting, and Wallock led off the lower seventh with back-to-back doubles to make it 4-3. Groundouts by Sayers and Kendra Celinski enabled Wallock to score the equalizer.
Rowles couldn\’t get the final out, though as Brown, a freshman, doubled to left center and advanced to third on a hit by Wilcox before Ashley Lange poked a single to complete the comeback.
Wallock struck out nine, walked two and gave up nine hits in her 12th win.
Rowles surrendered 13 hits and three walks.
Clearfield is 9-9 for today\’s regular-season finale at home against Johnsonburg at 4:15.
