Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. John E. Peterson, R-Pleasantville is proud to announce Upward Bound grants for Clarion University, Lock Haven University and Penn State University.
“Since coming to Congress, I’ve been an enthusiastic supporter of federal grant programs like Upward Bound,” said Peterson, a member of the Appropriations subcommittee that sets the level of funding for the Education Department. “Upward Bound continues to demonstrate fantastic returns throughout Pennsylvania.”
“Our Upward Bound program is honored to continue assisting low-income students in rural western Pennsylvania to become the first in their family to go to college. In September of 2008, we will celebrate our 30th year of continuous funding from the U.S. Department of Education,” said Michele Lagnese, Clarion Upward Bound director. “On behalf of our staff, current students, and alumni, we thank Congressman Peterson and the Education Department for their faith in our ability to help students achieve their dreams of earning a college education.”
“This is great news. Our program helps rural high school students in central Pennsylvania get a chance at higher education who, without Upward Bound, wouldn’t have had an opportunity. This program allows kids to follow their dreams,” said Carroll Rhoades, Lock Haven Upward Bound director. “We cannot thank Congressman Peterson enough for his strong and consistent voice on behalf of rural educators everywhere.”
“The continuation of Penn State’s Upward Bound program will contribute to the educational attainment of local students who face vast financial and social barriers on the road to college. We appreciate Congressman Peterson’s on-going support of Upward Bound and other TRIO programs in rural sections of his Pennsylvania districts,” said John Kula, Penn State Upward Bound director.
Upward Bound offers assistance to low-income, first generation college students as they navigate the intricate path to higher education. Among the services provided are tutoring, financial counseling, information on post-secondary schools and assistance for college entrance exams and applications.
“Representing one of the most rural districts in the country, I know full well how important every opportunity is to help our students achieve higher education. I will continue to work to see that Upward Bound, and programs like it, remains accessible,” added Peterson.
Clarion University will receive $411,186, Lock Haven University will receive $250,000, and Penn State University will receive $462,176 in funding, respectively.
