CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority approved going to bid for a paving project in the Wopsononock Natural Area during its monthly meeting Wednesday.
“This is a sensitive watershed, and we’re obliged to protect it,” said Wilson Fisher, authority member.
Terry Malloy, also a authority member, noting that the planned paving project is to help with drainage problems on the road at Wopsononock. He said this project has nothing to do with any perceived plans to house a zoo in the natural area.
Authority member and county commissioner Mark McCracken said he has been in contact with other officials in the county who assured him that there are many areas available that meet the Central Pennsylvania Zoological Society’s requirements.
“There’s plenty of sites available that they will have to look at and consider,” he said.
Wes Weymers, authority president, said the CCRTA has no agreement “official or unofficial” with the zoological society.
“We probably brought the people to the meeting a little prematurely,” he said.
CCRTA Director Sandy Fink Barrett also issued a reminder that all-terrain vehicle riding is not allowed on any of the 588 acres at the Wopsononock Natural Area.
“We do have signs, and they will be posted directly.”
