CLARION — Eight Bison wrestlers made medal stand appearances last night at the District 9 Class AAA Championships at Clarion University’s Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium.
Clearfield was led by heavyweight Sean Owen, who posted two falls en route the Bisons’ only district crown.
Owen needed only 1:16 to get the fall over St. Marys’ Dwayne Shaberal and advance to the championship bout, where he faced Bradford’s Ryan Mongillo in a re-match.
Owen pinned Mongillo in 2:18 earlier this season, and repeated that success with a fall in 1:08.
The pair of falls upped Owen’s record to 27-6.
Clearfield sent three other Bisons to the finals, where they fell to their DuBois opponents to finish second for the tournament.
Shawn Hall and Anthony Moore lost by decision at 135 and 140 pounds, respectively.
Hall went to battle with Nick Centra, who used three takedowns and an escape to get the 7-0 decision win.
Moore took the mat against Brian Hineman, but came up short 9-3.
Hineman jumped ahead 7-1, before adding a takedown in the third. Moore notched two escapes to set the final.
At 160, Zach Lundgren took a 5-0 lead into the final period, where he played take-them-down-let-them up with Lee Zalno.
Lundgren picked up four third period takedowns to win by a 13-3 major decision. Lundgren was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.
Placing third for Clearfield were Holden Lowe (119), Kasey Casher (152), Jake Riglin (171) and Andre Buck (189).
The remaining eight Bisons will return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Northwest Regional Championships at the Altoona Fieldhouse.
